Knowing the Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Ball Joint

t’s often the case that the smallest parts of your vehicle can cause the biggest problems when they start to wear down. Such is the case for the ball joints in your suspension system. Ball joints in most vehicles have relatively long lifespans, although how you treat that vehicle certainly plays a part in the frequency in which you need a replacement. Knowing the symptoms of a bad or failing ball joint is especially important, as driving with a faulty one for too long can be actively dangerous for your vehicle and for your own health.

Clunking Sounds From Suspension

It’s always frustrating to hear a new noise from your truck that you’ve never heard before. The trick is determining that the sound comes from the ball joint rather than something else. If you hear a sort of clunking sound, especially from the front of the vehicle, it’s often a common symptom of a bad or failing ball joint. Pay close attention to the sound when you go over particularly bumpy road or speed bumps, as the clunking sound will likely be much louder.

Noticeable Vibrations

You may notice this along with the noises, or it could happen independent of each other. As the socket of the ball joint gets worn down, the whole thing can start to vibrate in place. You can feel these vibrations as you drive, but this process can happen slowly over time, so you need to be wary to avoid becoming accustomed to the vibrations. You’ll feel them coming from the front of the vehicle most often, even more so when you hit bumps and drive on rougher roads.

Changes in Steering Capabilities

If your truck starts to wander to one side over another, it’s an immediate cause for concern. You shouldn’t wander to the left or right much at all if you take your hands off the steering wheel for a moment. This wandering is often a sign that your alignment isn’t where it should be. This could indicate a ball joint issue since they can start to affect your alignment over time if you don’t take care of it immediately.

Uneven Wear on Tires

Tires that are worn down in an uneven way could be an indication of a ball joint issue. The key here is to know what kind of wear a loose or failing ball joint will cause so you can correctly identify it. If the issue is the ball joint, one side of the tire will be more worn than the other. A tire with excessive inside edge wear means your lower ball joint is the issue. A tire with excessive outside edge wear means the problem is that the upper ball joint is loose.
