Ditch the flattened, restrictive factory downpipe on your 2017–2025 GM 6.6L Duramax L5P and replace it with a full 3.5" mandrel-bent high flow unit. Smooth internal bends and a larger cross-section let the BorgWarner VGT turbo breathe, drop EGTs under load, sharpen throttle response, and deepen the exhaust tone — with a direct bolt-on install that reuses your factory V-band clamps at the turbo and DOC.
True 3.5" mandrel-bent flow path — larger diameter and smoother bends than the crushed factory downpipe that chokes flow right off the turbo outlet
Meaningful EGT reduction — 3.5" mandrel-bent downpipes are widely regarded as the sweet spot for L5P EGT control under towing and heavy load
Faster BorgWarner VGT spool & sharper throttle response — less post-turbo backpressure means the vanes see less load and boost builds sooner
Real power gains — roughly 20–25 rwhp on a stock truck; more when paired with a tune or a full downpipe-back exhaust
Direct bolt-on fitment — reuses the factory V-band clamp at the turbo outlet and at the DOC connection; no cutting, welding, or tuning required
Works with the stock 3" exhaust or many 4" / 5" downpipe-back system
Fits 2017–2025 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra 2500HD / 3500HD with the 6.6L L5P Duramax
Deeper, cleaner diesel tone — reduces the tinny factory turbine sound
The 2017–2025 6.6L Duramax L5P is a strong platform out of the box (445 hp / 910 lb-ft from the factory), but GM packaged it with a downpipe that is physically flattened and full of tight bends to clear the transmission and firewall. That crushed section sits directly downstream of the BorgWarner variable-geometry turbine, and it's one of the first real bottlenecks in the L5P's exhaust path.
This high flow downpipe replaces that section with a smooth, mandrel-bent 3.5" tube that carries a consistent, larger-than-stock bore from the turbo flange to the DOC connection. The result: hot exhaust gases evacuate faster, drive pressure drops, and the VGT vanes work less to make the same boost. In practice, owners feel it as quicker off-idle response, cooler EGTs when towing or climbing grades, and a noticeably cleaner exhaust note.
The 3.5" size is the balanced choice for the L5P — bigger than the factory pipe for real flow gains, but sized to bolt directly to the OEM downpipe-to-DOC V-band without adapters. It's a true bolt-on with no tuning required, and most installs run under 90 minutes with hand tools.
Not compatible with: LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, or LML Duramax engines (different downpipe geometry and turbo outlet). Not a fit for the 2024+ light-duty 3.0L LZ0 Duramax.
Diameter: 3.5" full mandrel bend
Turbo-side connection: Factory V-band (reuses OEM clamp)
Exhaust-side connection: V-band at DOC (reuses OEM clamp)
Tuning required: None
Install time: ~60–90 minutes with hand tools
Tools needed: 3/8" or 1/2" drive ratchet, metric sockets (10, 13, 15 mm), penetrating oil
Emissions status: Not legal for sale or use in California or on any pollution-controlled motor vehicle (see below)
Sluggish off-idle throttle response
High EGTs when towing, grade-climbing, or under tune
Excessive drive pressure at higher RPM
Cracked, warped, or leaking factory downpipe (a known long-term wear point)
Prep step for a 4"/5" downpipe-back exhaust or future tuning
Exhaust restriction can contribute to boost-related codes on the L5P. If you're chasing any of the following, address them before or alongside a downpipe swap — a downpipe alone will not clear these, but it eliminates one variable:
P0299 — Turbocharger Engine Underboost (NHTSA GM TSB)
P2263 — Turbocharger Boost System Performance (NHTSA GM TSB)
P0234 — Turbocharger Overboost
P2599 — Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor High
P0299 on the L5P is most often caused by stuck VGT vanes, a failed actuator, or a boost leak in the charge air system, not the downpipe itself.
Let the truck cool fully and disconnect the batteries.
Soak both V-band clamps (turbo-outlet and downpipe-to-DOC) with penetrating oil.
Raise and safely support the truck.
Loosen and remove the V-band clamps at the turbo outlet and at the DOC.
Remove any heat shielding and, if needed, the transmission dipstick tube for clearance.
Drop the factory downpipe.
Position the new 3.5" downpipe from the top, connect at the turbo first (finger-tight), then attach the DOC-side V-band.
Align, then final-torque from the turbo down.
Start the truck, let it idle, and check for leaks at both flanges.

Will this fit my 2017–2025 L5P?
Yes. It's designed to fit every 2017–2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD/3500HD and GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD with the 6.6L L5P Duramax. It will not fit any LB7/LLY/LBZ/LMM/LML truck.
Do I need a tune to run this downpipe?
No. This is a direct bolt-on and requires no tuning. Even on a bone-stock truck you'll see lower EGTs and quicker spool. Bigger gains show up when combined with a tune.
Why 3.5" and not 3" or 4"?
3.5" is the sweet spot for the L5P: it's a significant step up from the crushed factory pipe for real flow and EGT gains, but still bolts directly to the OEM downpipe-to-DOC V-band without adapters. Stepping to 4" or 5" typically requires a full downpipe-back exhaust and is usually only possible on tuned, deleted, or high-horsepower builds.
How much horsepower will I gain?
Expect roughly 20–25 rwhp on a stock truck, with more available when paired with a tune. The bigger real-world wins are cooler EGTs and quicker spool, not just peak numbers.
Will it work with my stock exhaust?
Yes. It mates to the OEM downpipe-to-DOC V-band and works with the stock 3" cat-back or any 4" / 5" aftermarket downpipe-back system.
Do I need new clamps or a gasket?
No — the factory V-band clamps at the turbo and DOC are reused. Soak both clamps with penetrating oil the night before to break them loose cleanly.
How long does the install take?
Most DIY installs run 60–90 minutes with basic hand tools.
Is this CARB legal?
No. This part is not legal for sale or use in California or on any pollution-controlled motor vehicle. It is intended for off-road / competition use only.
Will it throw a check engine light?
No. Because the DOC and downstream emissions equipment remain in place and the pipe is a straight-flow replacement for the factory section, it does not trigger any codes on its own.
